Here's John Cox's comment on Senator Fred Thompson's "Tonight Show" appearance to announce his candidacy for President:

"The juxtaposition of the appearance of Fred Thompson on Leno competing with the New Hampshire 'debate' speaks volumes about what the presidential campaign of 2008 is all about. After six and a half years of the Bush administration, the media has had its fill of conservatives and desperately wants another bite at the Clinton presidency apple."

"Even the so-called conservative outlet, Fox News, wouldn't be upset, given their fond remembrance of the first Clinton administration - ask Rush Limbaugh what that presidency did for him - another Clinton would do just fine as a way to build up ratings. Meanwhile, the American people are staring down a number of intractable problems made worse, not better over the last several years: immigration laws not followed, tax code more complicated, health care more expensive and unavailable, schools not teaching but spending vast sums, and of course, a fight with Islamic fascism dominated by the mismanaged war in Iraq."

"So, what do we have? A former Senator, who labored (sic) in the Senate years ago, but who has found fame on television - appearing on the same network as his TV show - to announce his candidacy with a late night comedian. Is it a coincidence? Is it a joke? No, this is serious business and a definite marriage of convenience because he will generate huge ratings both for himself and Jay Leno. What of the other television spectacular? We will see on Fox News Channel another dog and pony show with the same candidates (well, almost - two lesser lights dropped out) answering the same questions the same way. Even after another joint appearance, will anyone believe Mitt Romney's conversions? Will anyone think Rudy is all of a sudden a conservative? Will anyone agree with John McCain's embrace of Ted Kennedy? Will career pols Hunter, Huckabee, Brownback and Tancredo convince anyone they will do something different when they sat by and watched supposedly Republican leadership spend our children into oblivion?"
